Q3. What Kind Of Media Institution Might Distribute Your Media Product And Why?

Q4. Who Would Be The Audience For Your Media Product?

The magazine is welcome to all age groups however primarily my target audience is aimed towards youths aged 16-18, who have an interest in indie rock music and its culture. I have based my age group on the survey data i collected for my research and planning which i discovered that the most age consuming group for indie rock magazines is teenagers aged 16-18. This is specific to my genre as the research collected was based on people who read magazines such as Q and NME. My magazine will be also unisex to ensure i have a wide market and do not prejudice again the female market. The type of person who would be interesting in my magazine are people who are already quite involved in indie culture or those who want to get more involve it in. In addition my magazine is also marketed at people who enjoying going to gigs and festivals as my magazine will have all the up to date information on this too.

Reader Profile: Flynn(aged 17), is a college student from London with a real passion for music. Currently Flynn is a drummer for a indie rock band called 'Spanish Class' and played at major festivals such as Glastonbury and Leeds. When Flynn is not practicing he is often researching obscure indie band which are perhaps not very well know or trying to book gigs to see some of his favourite bands. Music wise Flynn listens to artists such as, Arctic Monkeys, The Strokes, Alt J, Foals, Tame Impala, MGMT, The 1975, Arcade Fire, and the Kooks. Flynn currently has a monthly prescription with NME and is a fond reader of it, he states 'NME has help me to keep on top of indie music as well as provided me with the necessary resources for up coming gigs and festivals. Flynn also uses the magazine as a fashion resource, to keep up with the new 'Indie' trends as well as the music.

The reader profile is great example of the type of audience i am basing my media product around. My reader profile doesn't just specify the person it also goes on to talk other aspects of my target audience including profession, fashion and hobby which i'm sure wont differ to much to my target audiences.

My Magazine: Double Page Spread

My Magazine: Contents

My Magazine: Front Cover

Double Page Spread Article

Draped in ivy, and shrouded in pathos Tymes new album ‘Blood Shake’ was undoubtedly due to get some pained hearts a flutter. Single/Guitarist, and face of the band Cami Candi has that sort of haunting mope that bleeds the soul clean, which used in conjunction with the more subtle greys of the band mates, bliss is created. The atmospheric season timing was perfect for the upcoming album, from the crisp sultry sorrows of winter, to the soft licks of the dying ember described as Cami’s voice. The trio successfully captures the fragile emotional state of youths today, and like delicately spun cobwebs we hear Cami’s damaging story unravel.

After the first two pop waffling tracks of the album, Cami’s ethereal slur takes us even deeper than her third track ‘Swim Deep’, which tells a story of loves loss and an escape of reality for the young singer. From the bitter sweet grasps of love, the album undoubtedly begins to get a bit more destructive and dark as Cami’s childhood of sexual abuse becomes the lyrics of her fourth track ‘Tropical Nightmare’ where it verges on the boundaries of absurd and the absolution of brilliance. Fluctuating, the reverb adds a sense of vengefulness to the already disquieting ambiance, giving it an edge to the rest of tracks and highlights its magnificence. Track 5, ‘Bleach’ does however follow the previous dark implication of ‘Tropical Nightmare’ but with limited success as it misses the obscurity and downright queer conventions of the track.  The track opens with the line, ’We are the reckless, we are the stained youths’  and you can’t help but raise an angled smile, the way Cami almost makes childhood looks like horror movie, and from her traumatic one we can only marvel at her music.
Track 6 becomes the self proclaimed identity track for the new album, ‘Blood Shake’ is the perfect example to represent the album, despite not being as exotic as some of the other tracks the song still remains at the pinnacle of indie rock, and shows some of the promise qualities the rest of the album portrays. Like any shake the song builds and builds until an explosion of euphoria erupts, the instrumental chorus truly is something to behold.  Things unfortunately go a bit bland after that with Seventh track of the album ‘Labour’ which refers to more normal and restrictive life styles of everyday people.  The rather monotone melody of the track drowns out Cami’s cosmic voice, and really adds to the mundane subject of the song. Luckily however thing do improve with second to last song of the album ‘Peaches’ which entices you to the fruitier side of indie rock. The biblical lyrics cleverly reference the fruits of Eden, and make for a truly interesting song. Using wavering vocals and symbolism Cami successfully manages to portray the temptations of modern teenage society such as sex, drugs and smoking. These addictive temptations are nothing compared to the fix you get from the track however, from the escalating key to tropical chords, it really is worth of it fruity title. Last Track of the album ‘Velvet’, truly lives up to its name, the track could be described as almost velvet soft, but not the same type of mellow we would expect of Floxygen, but more of the soul stirring soft from bands such as The XX and London Grammar. ‘Velvet’, personally relates to one of Cami previous relationships in which despite knowing she was being used she couldn't bring her self to end it. But my has grown up the almost childish problems of Velvet don't even compare to  the tantalizing lyrics of ‘Tropical Nightmare’ but still makes for an interesting song none of the less.

The trio really did excel themselves with the new album this year. They did promise us some pretty new and interesting compositions and without a doubt they delivered some of the most abstract and unique compositions of this year. The band are rumored to be touring London this year for the Reading and Leeds Festival in August, which if so I strongly advised you to buy ticket and ensure you don’t miss this unmissable event.

My Magazine Example Pages

Further Title Analysis

When producing my pages i quickly discovered the problems that came with a long title name such as 'Euphoria Magazine' and despite me already making a title analysis page i only discovered the inconvenience when actually putting it in to practice. It was only when i brought a Q magazine myself that i thought to abbreviate my title to 'Em'. In addition after reading magazines such as Nme and Q i found that red and white where a common colour theme used in indie rock magazines and is another feature i need to consider when redesigning my title.  The large red box with abbreviated letter still takes up less space, and fits the more rigid structure of the magazine.

Symbolism In Indie Rock Culture

After watching the indie rock, music video and reading magazines such as Q and NME i noticed a few symbol kept cropping up in relation the to the genre. This included globally known symbols such as the peace sign which is predominately used in indie rock culture as a mark of freedom and love. The well respected symbol can almost found every indie rock video and indigenous to this particular genre of music. In future i intend to incorporate some of these symbols into my magazine as a possible way to attract my target audience and to sell as a unique selling point for my product.

Examples Of Indie Rock Bands

I decided to look at some indie rock bands to ensure my data and analysis was correct so far, from what we can observe i was certain right to a degree, as both the costuming and the mise en scene for the genre is exactly as i predicted and has confirmed some of my future ideas for my indie rock magazine. Like assumed, the use of denims has clearly been used in an attempt to portray indie rock music and along with the ultra skinny jeans this point has been firmly made. The florescent to dull colour spectrum has also given me something to think about as the effects have cleverly been used to exaggerate and nullify certain aspects of the video and maybe equally as effective when designing my indie rock magazine.

Survey Conclusion

The result of my online questionnaire (which was completed by the public) shows interesting reading based on the 9 questions that were asked. 90% of the public would prefer the magazine to be based on band information to Solo Artist with 23.33%. This indicates that in today climate bands are deemed to be found more interesting that solo artists. When designing my magazine I intended to in-corporate this. Nearly 67% of the public would choose the magazine to be imaged based. When designing my magazine I intend to add many pictures to fit the needs of the public. The majority of the public voted that they would prefer the colour scheme to be genre based. I will make certain indie friendly colours are used such as reds, which are can be found in indie magazine such as NME and Q magazine. The public have indicate that they would prefer both news of up coming albums & gigs making them joint favourites as both scored 62.07%. I will ensure that at least one of these topics is used for my double page spread article. When asked sexual preference for genre music although the public voted ‘don’t mind’ at 46.67 male artists came a close second with 40%, meaning I will hold no sexual preference when designing the publication. However, I will try to use a male model if possible. My target audience is based around 16-18 year olds who are more likely to buy the magazine due to it being the younger generation that are more in tuned to indie music. I will bear this in mind when planning my topics for the magazine to ensure my magazine gets properly marketed. The majority of the public are willing to pay up to £3 for each publication. Suggesting my magazine should not exceed the £3 mark even if is more of a high end product. The most popular preference of magazine release is weekly, so I intend to release a new promising music magazine every week. As I could not come up with a name for my product I let the general public decided upon a name for my magazine. The most popular and suitable recommendation for the magazine was Euphoria which I have chosen to keep.
